Increased commercial waste diversion

SKM Recycling aims to increase commercial waste diversion by 10,000 tonnes in a year through an upgrade at its Coolaroo facility.

The upgrade includes the purchase of a cardboard screen, conveyors and a metering drum which allows SKM to receive large quantities of co-mingled recycling materials and bulky industrial cardboard at its existing site.

The simple 'kerbside recycling' system was previously unavailable to commercial enterprises.

Where previously the co-mingled recyclables would go directly to landfill, the new system allows commercial enterprises to separate their co-mingled materials from rubbish for it to be processed.

Sustainability Victoria part-funded the $500,000 upgrade through the Towards Zero Waste Commercial and Industrial Resource Recovery Grants Program.
