Victorian ResourceSmart awards winners announced

The winners of the 2008 ResourceSmart School of the Year Award were announced today at the 'Kids Teaching Kids' ceremony attended by over 350 students at Federation Square's BMW Edge.

Environment and Climate Change Minister Gavin Jennings said the ResourceSmart Schools Awards, managed by Sustainability Victoria, recognise the commitment and achievements of Victorian schools in reducing their environmental impacts.

"The young people of today are the decision makers of the future and these awards provide a great incentive for students to think about the future and build sustainability into everyday decisions," Mr Jennings said.

This year, 80 entries from 40 schools across Victoria were entered into the Awards.

The award categories and winners are:
ResourceSmart School of the Year - Joint winners - Mildura West Primary School and                      Western Port Secondary College;
  
Waste Smart School of the Year:  Mildura West Primary School;
     Sale College Guthridge Campus;

Water Smart School of the Year: Balnarring Primary School;
     Western Port Secondary College;

Biodiversity Smart School of the Year: St Francis of the Fields Primary School, Strathfieldsaye;
        Western Port Secondary College;

Energy Smart School of the Year: Bentleigh West Primary School;
     Western Port Secondary College.

Students representing the 18 finalists presented their solutions at today's awards ceremony.

"Winning this award is a great achievement for these schools. The judging panel and Sustainability Victoria had a tough time choosing the winner because the entries were of such a high standard," Mr Jennings said. 

Schools will share in $25,000 in prizes to assist with their ongoing sustainability projects.
