Detox your Home is a free service for householders to dispose of potentially dangerous household chemical products safely and easily without harming the environment. Detox your Home is administered by Sustainability Victoria and delivered in partnership with local governments and is funded by the Victorian landfill levy.
Victorians can take their household chemical products to a convenient Detox your Home drop-off point at either a permanent site or through the mobile service. All Victorian householders can use any of the drop-off points for free.
Businesses of any sort are ineligible to use the Detox your Home service and should instead contact a chemical waste disposal service provider (download list below or look in the Yellow Pages). For further information call Sustainability Victoria on 1800 35 32 33.

Detox your home
Most of us have unwanted chemical products stored in our house, garage, or garden shed.
They might be old cleaners, left over paints, batteries, weed killer or used break fluids.
Some household products contain chemicals that are dangerous to children and pets and can harm the environment.
Detox your home provides Victorian householders with an opportunity to dispose of their household chemicals for free and in an environmentally responsible manner.
There's no limit in the amount of household chemicals that you bring to a collection, but we do only except containers up to the size of twenty litres or twenty kilograms.
We suggest you exercise caution when collecting chemicals around your home, use gloves, make sure that containers are sealed and not leaking.
Mobile detox your home collections are normally located at council or shire sites, or resource recovery centres.
We accept a wide range of household chemicals through the detox your home program, we suggest that you look at our website to check what items we do accept, there are a number of items we don't accept as well.
Mobile sites do not accept chemicals that used for industrial and commercial purposes, farm chemicals, waste asbestos or ammunition.
Mobile sites do not normally collect motor oil, householders are urged to check with their council for the best disposal option in their area.
Empty containers will not be accepted.
Detox your home collections are held are held throughout Victorian metropolitan and regional areas.
When householders arrive at a collection site you'll be directed to an area where you pull up in your vehicle and our staff will unload your car for you.
"I think it's fantastic I think it's a great idea"
"And what are you getting rid of today?"
"Paint, petrol and some paint stripper and things like that."
"So if you didn't have a service like this what would happen to that?"
"I'd take it to the tip"
"I think the service is terrific, you never know where to put these things, you don't want to put them on the nature strip for hard rubbish collection. This service lets you get rid of them safely and properly it's terrific."
At the collection site, products are sorted and placed in bins either for recycling or for treatment in safe disposal.
The collected items are then transported to a specialist waste treatment facility.
"It's interesting because when a consumer brings materials to the site it's often the end of the line for them, but for us it's merely the beginning. So although we've sorted and segregated at site materials will come into us and we'll further sort and segregate into various disposal outlets, so those disposal outlets are generally for energy recovery or for further treatment through offsite businesses.
We would estimate that approximately 90 per cent of materials that come in here is recycled or recovered for typical things like energy recovery um things like the metal containers and cans that this material was held in is also recovered and recycled into other various still products.
The other 10 per cent that can't be recycled is rendered safe and ultimately the protection to the environment is our key focus so whether it's through trade waste processes, neutralisations acids and bases and the like which effectively renders them neutral uh and then the harm is pretty much gone.
A number of free detox your home permanent facilities are also available across Victoria and accept a limited range of chemical products.
Further information about these permanent facilities and the detox your home mobile collections can be obtained at the ResourceSmart website, or by calling 1800 353 233.
