Regional Waste Management Groups
Regional Waste Management Groups (RWMGs) are responsible for planning the management of municipal solid waste in Victoria.
There are 13 regions and each encompasses one or more councils. Regional waste management groups have to prepare regional waste management plans which set out the group's objectives and priorities for the management of municipal waste generated or disposed of within the region, and provide a clear direction for future waste management.
The regional waste management groups also play a role in educating the community about waste minimisation and resource recovery. Regional education officers provide advice and assistance with waste reduction programs, such as:
- Waste Wise in schools - waste and litter reduction programs and curriculum materials for schools
- Waste Wise at events - tools and advice for event organisers to create effective recycling and waste management systems
- Waste Wise in local government
Regional Waste Management Groups were established under the Environment Protection (Amendment) Act 1996 and 2006 and their responsibilities and functions are set out in the Environment Protection Act 1970 (see link to Victorian Law Today Library).
The Association for Victorian Regional Waste Management Groups (AVRWMG) is the forum for RWMGs to meet and discuss waste management and related issues. For more information about the Association, visit the AVRWMG website.
