ResourceSmart Government program

The ResourceSmart Government Program for Change, developed by Sustainability Victoria and the Department of Sustainability and Environment, provides tailored direction and support for Government agencies to integrate environmental management with their strategic and operational management processes. The program provides a continual improvement framework to assist agencies to identify and address priority environmental impacts to suit individual needs.

The ResourceSmart Government Program for Change is supported by the Tools for Change. The tools provide relevant background information, how to guides, useful templates and examples to assist agencies to complete the program and implement actions to reduce environmental impacts.

Background

The ResourceSmart Government Program is helping to meet government sustainability leadership needs and the Victorian Government policies and targets. Victoria's Sustainability Action Statement, Our Environment Our Future is a $200 million action plan to help government, industry, businesses and households to protect our assets for future generations.

Government environmental leadership

Our Environment, Our Future - Sustainability Action Statement is the Victorian Government's strategic framework for leading by example and implementing sustainability initiatives across its operations. See the link at the bottom of the page to the full statement.

Launched in 2006, ESAS aims to make Victoria a beacon for environmental sustainability. It outlines a range of specific commitments in relation to Government operations, such as:

• Departments and agencies will include strategic directions in all their business and operational planning, including their environmental management systems.
• The Government will build environmental sustainability into planning and operations of all departments, and government policies, programs, regulations, investments and budgets
• The Commissioner for Environmental Sustainability will annually review the adoption of ESAS directions by government departments and agencies.
