The Resource Smart Commercial Buildings Program aims to deliver greenhouse gas and water savings through specific support initiatives, while also building the capacity of the broader market to improve existing building performance in the longer term.
Major property owners can partner with Sustainability Victoria through Sustainability Partnerships to deliver measurable carbon and water reductions. Greater reductions can be leveraged by Sustainability Victoria assisting owners with their strategic, operational and investment activities.
Critical to the success of ResourceSmart Commercial Buildings is:
- High-level leadership and buy-in from the Board/Executive. Although they may not be part of the program day to day, their support is necessary to drive the program through to completion.
- A clear business goal - whether carbon neutrality, portfolio performance or a mechanism to reposition their asset to retain tenants, property owners need a focus
- Knowledge and awareness of their portfolio's energy, water and waste performance. Strategic reporting to senior management is considered vital to achieve long term/large scale change.
- To realise the most easily acheivable goals early. Many energy and water savings can be implemented quickly with a good return on investment (low cost/no cost). While it's important to gain these early wins, it's also important to appreciate they do not achieve large scale reductions.
